LabelChrist, seen at the upper right next to Pilate, is surrounded by figures who look more like fiends than human beings. Their repulsive features, bristling weapons, and bizarre headgear separate them from the impassive figure of Christ, and also from the viewer. The flat, relief-like setting, divided into two levels by an unbalanced architectural structure, adds to the nightmarish feeling of this scene. |
